FUN Stuff to Do

This is what we did this week:

On Thursday and Friday we had basketball tournaments between The Flying Squirrels, Yo Momma, and The Bombers. The Bombers were the champions on Thursday but the Flying Squirrels beat them on Friday.

We made tons of shrink bead designs, a few friendship bracelets, and did some coloring and painting.

Jill Lauer came and taught us how to make homemade doggy biscuits on Thursday. Friday we went to the library in Cottonwood Falls to help the Parents as Teachers kids make jars for the dog treats. The Buck Foundation taught us how to care for our pets.

We had lots of fun board games for you to play but this week Monopoly, Checkers, and Connect Four were the games of choice.

Ready for the Rodeo

We designed a great float for the parade and plan on having about 20 kids participating with us.

FYI

David Gass comes to give guitar lessons every Tuesday.

You can bring your bike and helmet to ride on the basketball court and try out our new ramp. Remember, helmets are required!

There’s always fun things to do and new people to meet at camp. This week we had six new campers join us and kept the Tech Center hoppin’ all morning.

We had lots of fun in the music room. Not only did Dave Gass come to teach us how to play the guitar we also sang some karaoke to entertain the crowds.

A week full of eVents

This week we had lots of special guests that made for a very fun and educational week.

On Monday Terri taught us about train safety.

Tuesday we had a guest from Newman Memorial Hospital who taught us about bicycle safety. We are especially thankful to KDOT and the hospital for donating 25 helmets to our campers. We have a few extra so if you know anyone who needs a helmet please bring them down to the Tech Center.

We also had a fun night of family fun at the Tech Center on Thursday.

We enjoyed a yummy meal and then had a rousing game of Family Feud. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Finally, on Friday we joined the Parents as Teachers folks at the library. Thanks to the 4-H students who brought their chickens and guineas to teach us about their animals who like eating bugs.

Thanks to our speakers!

Patty from the extension agency taught us about the new food pyramid and taught us how to make some delicious new popcorn recipes.

Kyla Scott taught us how to crochet and told us about her adventures in Kenya last summer. It was fun to imagine being on the bus driving through the park and seeing amazing animals like hippopotamus, elephants, lions, tigers, cheetahs, monkeys, and much more.

Detective Mischler from the Emporia Police Department joined us to talk to us about drugs and alcohol.

This week we had lots of super fun Arts and Crafts. Some of the fun things that we did included shrinky dinks, suncatchers, and clay.

Some new additions

It seems like someone new joins us every week at camp. We’re always super glad to see everyone and continue to invite anyone who wants to come to join us for the last two weeks of camp.

Last week Courtney Clark joined us and will continue to be with us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until the end of camp. She’s working with the Leaders in Training at Camp Wood and it’s always a pleasure to have them share some of the great things that they do at Camp Wood with us. Welcome Courtney and crew!

Next Week At Camp

Liz and Heather Boyd will be going to California for the Youth to Youth Conference next week. They’ll be learning about how to get youth involved and coming back to share everything they learned. I’ve heard rumors that they may even take a break and go to Disney Land. Have fun you guys, we’ll miss you!

Fundraiser

Thanks to everyone who donated or bought cakes and pies for the Twin Cities Lyon’s Club fundraiser. We look forward to the proceeds going towards some great playground equipment in Swope Park.

S-p-o-o-n-s, spoons!

This week at camp the card game spoons was all the rage. We had a great time seeing exactly who the best and fastest spoon scooper is.

We also learned a lot about being safe while using the internet. We recommend to all parents who have kids using the internet that you check out the site:

www. netsmartz.org. There are tons of great tips on keeping your child safe while using the internet and some awesome programs for educating your kids.

Courtney brought a new crew of campers from Camp Wood this week. We are very happy to welcome Andrew, Dawn, Katie, Rose Marie, Randall, Laura, Cade, and Kyle. They always bring fun things to do and this week we had a great kickball tournament, played a rousing game of Family Feud, and made a beautiful “Under the Sea” chalk mural.
